Habitat Builds with Raised Floor Living

Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County is partnering with Raised Floor Living to sponsor the construction of two homes in East Mobile. These homes are built utilizing two foundation systems – one is a slab-on-grade and the other features a raised wood floor system.

There will be a cost and techniques analysis of the building process to compare the two methods of construction.  Also, utility usage will be reviewed once the houses are completed to see if there are any utility cost savings in one style versus the other. As an international, nonprofit housing organization, Habitat for Humanity uses a variety of construction methods to build sustainable and affordable housing. To learn more about the raised floor system and the construction of these homes, click here.

100 Women - Over 50 - 100 Days

HFHMC and volunteers dedicate senior Women Build House

Mobile, Ala. (Feb.27, 2009) – As part of Habitat for Humanity's Women Build program, Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County (HFHMC) and a crew of women volunteers and sponsors gathered today at 1508 Lois Drive in Mobile to dedicate the home they helped build in partnership with Elizabeth Davies and her 4-year-old son.

The Women Build program, underwritten by Lowe’s, brings women from all walks of life together to learn construction skills and then use those skills to be part of the solution to poverty housing. In addition to its role as Women Build underwriter, Lowe’s also provided HFHMC a $50,000 grant to build the house.

With this Women Build project, “100 Women, 1 House, in 100 Days,” HFHMC celebrates a number of first-time accomplishments: The home is the first senior Women Build for women volunteers age 50 and older; and the first built by 100 volunteers in 100 days. The 100 concept was created by HFHMC’s CEO, Brenda Carson Lawless, who wanted to give senior women an opportunity to show they can do whatever they put their minds to. Finally, this project was the affiliate’s first house framed with BluWood, a mold, fungus, rot, and termite resistant product available at Lowe’s.

“Through Lowe’s ongoing commitment to Habitat, we see first-hand the impact Habitat makes on people’s lives every day,” said Alex Reya, store manager of Lowe’s of S.W. Mobile. “While Lowe’s grant for this home enables us to help address the issue of affordable housing in our community, my colleagues and I find the opportunity to offer our construction know-how and be volunteers on the build site to be an equally worthwhile investment— an investment of our time and energy.”

The senior Women Build home on Lois Drive will add to the more than 1,400 Habitat for Humanity houses built by women throughout the United States.

Senior Women Build - Start to Finish

We dedicated our Senior Women Build home on Friday and it was a very special event. The Davies family moved into the home the week before, so we were able to see the house fully furnished, complete with family photos on the shelves and a movie playing on the TV! It was a wonderful dedication ceremony, with special words from the house sponsor, Lowe's, and an emotional thank you from our homeowner. Her new puppy even got in on the action! See the slideshow below for images from the project from framing to dedication. Thank you to all our wonderful senior women who came out to volunteer! You made this happen!

February E-Newsletter

Take a look at our new technology

January was a month of new ideas at HFHMC and now you get to see the results! If you have been to our website, www.habitatmobile.org lately, you will have noticed a few new things. For one, we have a new Blog that will be updated with the latest news and information about the goings on at HFHMC. You can become a follower of this blog if you are a member of Blogger, or you can subscribe to the RSS feed if you want to read the updates in your feed reader. If you have no idea what all that means, just keep coming back to our website – we will post links to the newest news and information there as well!

You will also notice that this e-newsletter is different. Based on feedback we have received from you, our subscribers, about the size of the e-newsletter we have been sending, this new design was created. The green links will lead you to places where you can view photos, videos, and additional information about the stories in this e-newsletter. This cuts down on the file size while still providing the information and visuals you want. Feedback is appreciated, so if you have any thoughts about this new monthly e-newsletter, please email ahavel@habitatmobile.org

Additional tech improvements include a MySpace page, a Facebook group, and a Causes page. We are also working on more videos for our brand new YouTube channel! All these additions in technology will help us communicate with volunteers, sponsors, and potential supporters of our mission in new and more interesting ways! Take a look at some of our new things and let us know what you think.

Donate to Habitat in 2009 to Help More Families

Mortgage meltdown, credit crisis, an economy in ruins - and who suffers the most? The people who were already struggling. Our families work hard, sometimes they hold down more than one job and then have duties at home such as making dinner, helping children with homework, and running the household, sometimes as the only adult. People in these situations struggle to keep their head above water in the best of times, but now that we are seeing the worst, they are suffering even more. Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County is dedicated to helping these families at the fastest pace that we can while maintaining quality and a great worksite experience for our volunteers, as well as an educational experience for our homeowners. For instance, after they are qualified, prospective homeowners must work on someone else’s house and then their own house, putting in over 300 hours of “sweat equity” into the program before they can move into their home. The children even get an opportunity to help by getting good grades in school! If you would like to donate to Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County and help a family in Mobile realize their dream of homeownership, please contact Anita Havel by emailing ahavel@habitatmobile.org or call the office: 251-476-7171. You can also donate online or send a check.

Sad news for the Habitat family

February 3, 2009

Dear Habitat for Humanity partners,

Habitat for Humanity is deeply saddened by the death of Millard Fuller, the visionary whose ideas and tireless work created Habitat for Humanity.

Mr. Fuller led Habitat from its founding in 1976 until his separation from the organization and his founding of the Fuller Center for Housing in 2005. He died early today, Feb. 3, following a brief illness. He was 74.

“Millard Fuller was a force of nature who turned a simple idea into an international organization that has helped more than 300,000 families move from deplorable housing into simple, decent homes they helped build and can afford to buy and live in,” said Jonathan Reckford, chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity International. “The entire Habitat family mourns the loss of our founder, a true giant in the affordable housing movement. Our prayers are with the entire Fuller family.”

The idea for Habitat for Humanity was born at Koinonia Farm, a Christian farming community founded in 1942 in rural southwest Georgia to be a “demonstration plot for the Kingdom of God.” Millard and Linda Fuller made their way to that demonstration plot in 1965.

By the time Millard Fuller turned 29, he had earned his first million dollars as an entrepreneur and attorney. But as his finances flourished, his health and marriage crumbled. To save their marriage, the Fullers decided to begin anew. They sold all that they owned, gave the money to the poor and in their searching, landed at Koinonia where they began soaking up the teachings of farmer, theologian and community founder Clarence Jordan.

In time, Jordan and Fuller launched a program of “partnership housing,” building simple houses in partnership with rural neighbors who were too poor to qualify for conventional home loans. The first house was dedicated in 1969 and others soon followed. In 1973, the Fullers took the concept of partnership housing to Africa. Within a few years, simple concrete-block homes were replacing unhealthy mud-and-thatch homes … and Millard Fuller had a bold idea: If partnership housing could improve lives in Georgia and Zaire, why not the rest of the world?

In 1976, the Fullers returned to the United States and launched Habitat for Humanity International. By the organization’s 25th anniversary, tens of thousands of people were volunteering with Habitat and more than 500,000 people were living in Habitat homes.
Millard Fuller was a prolific writer, authoring 10 books. He had received more than 50 honorary degrees and in 1996 received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. In presenting the medal, President Bill Clinton said, “Millard Fuller has done as much to make the dream of homeownership a reality in our country and throughout the world as any living person.” Jack Kemp, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and former HFHI board member agreed, adding, “When I’m asked about housing success stories from our inner cities, the first group that comes to mind is Habitat for Humanity.”

Among numerous other awards, Fuller was named to the National Housing Hall of Fame and had received the World Changer Award, the World Methodist Peace Award, the Norman Vincent Peale Award, the John W. Gardner Leadership Award and the Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award.

“Millard Fuller’s drive and relentless commitment to affordable housing captured people’s imagination and changed lives around the world,” said J. Ronald Terwilliger, chair of Habitat for Humanity’s International Board of Directors. “His inspiration lives on in Habitat’s work and through its employees, volunteers, partner families and supporters. We extend our sincere condolences to the Fuller family and are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers.”

January 2009 e-newsletter

Wrapping Up 2008, Looking Forward to 2009
2008 was an amazing year for Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County! It began with the planning of the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project, and ended with the dedication of all 30 houses included in that project, as well as 13 additional houses to finish out the year with a total of 43. What does all this mean? More families are now in safe, decent, affordable housing, and are taking the opportunity to make their lives better. That’s what it’s all about for us. In this e-newsletter, we will recap the highlights of 2008 and give you a glimpse of what’s in store for 2009. It’s going to be another exciting year!

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project
From beginning to end, the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project was an exciting event for Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County! In December, we dedicated all 30 houses that were part of the project, including a huge, 10-house dedication in the Hillsdale neighborhood. This was a special moment for our families and staff as we gathered in the cul-de-sac and celebrated the completion of this long project. Two major sponsors of the event were on hand to celebrate with the families, The Salvation Army and Lowe’s Home Improvement Center. It was a great day for everyone involved!

Senior Women Build Has a Successful Kickoff
We kicked off the first-ever Senior Women Build - one home built by 100 women over 50 in 100 days - in November and these women are still going strong! As of the beginning of January, we are working on interior work such as painting, floors, cabinets, etc. This project is ongoing until February, so if you haven’t worked on it and you are part of our senior women demographic, please give us a call! Women who are not in the correct age range can work on the house too, just call someone who is 50 or over to come out with you!

Looking For Families to Qualify for Homeownership
Families are selected on the basis of need, willingness to partner, and the ability to repay a no-interest mortgage.

Requirements for a Free Application:
• Current housing is inadequate due to problems with heating, water, electricity, plumbing or general disrepair, or the current home is overcrowded due to number of family members living in the home, or the rent is high.
• Unable to get a conventional loan for a home mortgage.
• Willing and able to provide 300-400 hours of “sweat equity” working on a Habitat house that is currently under construction as well as your own house.
• Able to pay approximately $350.00 per month on a 20-year mortgage. (example: for a 3-bedroom house)
• Able to make a $500.00 cash down payment upon final approval.
• Family is within the HUD guidelines 35% - 80% of the area median low income range.

February Orientation Dates
Thursday, Feb. 12 at 6 pm
Saturday, Feb. 28 at 10 a.m.

Orientation is held at the Habitat Home Improvement Center, which is located at 4128 Government Blvd in Mobile. Come learn more about the program and how a family can qualify. If you know of someone who might be interested, they can attend with no obligation. If they want to complete a free application, they need the following:
• proof of income
• all credit information
• bank information
• last tax return
• monthly bills
• lease agreement or rent receipt
• amount of insurance payments
• name, address & phone number of employer and landlord

Second Saturday Singles Build
Kicks Off on Valentine’s Day
New Year’s Resolution: Meet new people.
New Year’s Resolution: Get involved with the community.

Habitat for Humanity can help with both of those resolutions and more! On February 14, 2009, better known as Valentine’s Day, you can meet up with singles from across Mobile and Baldwin counties to help build a house in partnership with a family in need.

“If you’re like most singles I know, you might spend Valentine’s Day at home alone to avoid all the happy couples in restaurants and at the movies,” Anita Havel, Resource Development Manager of Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County, said. “But if you would rather do something productive with that alone time, come out to our work site and meet other singles who are interested in helping the community.”

We will work from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but you can do the morning shift, the afternoon shift, or all day. Lunch will be provided.

Search for us on MySpace and Facebook for more information, or just call the office and we will give you all the details and sign you up!

So many of our 2006-2008 homeowners were doing fine until Hurricane Katrina, and some of our new families were hit by the current economic disaster. One way or another, these families must receive some kind of help to get back on their feet. And that’s where we come in, and where you come in too! Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County is dedicated to helping these families at the fastest pace that we can while maintaining quality and a great worksite experience for our volunteers, as well as an educational experience for our homeowners.
